How Fluticasone works
Fluticasone furoate is a steroid that helps relieve allergy symptoms by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers in the body, such as histamines and prostaglandins. These messengers are released by immune cells when the body reacts to allergens like dust, pollen. They cause inflammation, leading to redness, swelling, sneezing, and a runny nose. By stopping these chemicals, Fluticasone reduces irritation and helps you breathe more comfortably.
Safety Measures and Warning
Allergy/hypersensitivity
Avoid taking this medication if you have a known allergy to fluticasone furoate. If you experience symptoms like rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy
Fluticasone Furoate should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor, as its safety in pregnant women is not fully established.
Children
If used for a long time, steroids like Fluticasone may slow down growth in children. That’s why a doctor should always decide the dose and monitor regularly.
Lung infections
Fluticasone reduces the body’s immune response in the lungs. If a person already has an infection, the medicine may make it worse instead of better.
Tuberculosis
Since Fluticasone weakens local immunity in the lungs, TB bacteria can grow more easily. It can cause TB symptoms to worsen or reactivate a hidden TB infection.
Fluticasone Interaction with Food Product
Fluticasone inhaler has no major food interactions and can be used with your regular meals. But try to avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as it can increase the medicine levels in your body and may cause side effects.
Fluticasone Interaction with Other Medicines
Avoid taking fluticasone furoate with the following medicines, as it may increase or decrease the desired effect, or in worse cases, it could be fatal:
Fluticasone Chemical Structure
IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry)/ Chemical name
(6α,11β,16α,17α)-6,9-Difluoro-11-hydroxy-16-methyl-3-oxo-17-(1-oxopropoxy)androsta-1,4-diene-17-carbothioic acid, S-(fluoromethyl) ester 2-furoate.

Intake routine/cycle
Daily dose
Take Fluticasone exactly as your doctor recommends. The dose may change based on your condition and how well you respond. Do not take more than prescribed without consulting your doctor.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take your medicine, take the medication as soon as you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Always consult the doctor before making any changes to your dosage.
Overdose
Don’t take more than 55 mcg/spray at each nostril fluticasone furoate in a day, as it may cause severe adverse effects due to overdosing of fluticasone furoate like darkening of the skin, fainting, loss of appetite, mental depression, unusual tiredness or weakness.
Storage
- Store the medicine at room temperature
- Keep away from sunlight and moisture
- Keep out of reach of children
Fluticasone Summary
Fluticasone furoate is an inhaled corticosteroid used for the long-term management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fluticasone furoate in general used to treat asthma, COPD, and allergic airway inflammation. It suppresses inflammation by stopping the release of inflammatory chemicals from cells like mast cells, eosinophils, and macrophages, which helps reduce airway swelling, mucus, and irritation.
Common side effects include sore throat, hoarseness, cough, oral thrush, and headache, while rare but serious effects may include allergic reactions, vision changes, adrenal suppression with prolonged use, and slowed growth in children. It is not an emergency medication and should be inhaled regularly as prescribed. Rinsing the mouth after inhalation helps reduce the risk of oral thrush, and caution is advised in patients with untreated infections or tuberculosis. It may also be combined with long-acting bronchodilators for better control in asthma or COPD.
