Sulfacetamide Uses  

Sulfacetamide is a topical antibiotic (eye). It is used for following conditions like: 

  1. Conjunctivitis 
  2. Blepharitis (infection or inflammation of the eyelids) 
  3. Infection after eye surgery or minor eye injuries   

Directions for use

  1. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor, at the same time each day. 
  2. Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor’s approval, even if you feel better. 
  3. If you forget to take this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.  

Sulfacetamide side effects 

More Common  

  1. Mild eye irritation or burning 
  2. Redness or itching in the eyes 
  3. Temporary blurred vision after application 
  4. Tearing or watery eyes  

Less Common

  1. Severe eye pain or swelling 
  2. Allergic reactions: rash, swelling of eyelids, or difficulty breathing 
  3. Eye infection

Allergy/Hypersensitivity

If you are allergic to this medicine, avoid using this medicine as it can cause serious allergic reactions such as swelling of eyelids, rash, itching, or breathing difficulties. Always use this medicine only under your doctor’s advice. 

Liver or kidney disease

Patients with significant liver or kidney disease should avoid this medicine because it may increase the risk of side effects. Use only if your doctor advises and monitors you carefully. 

Children under recommended age

Use in children below 8 years should be avoided unless your doctor specifically prescribes it.  

Pregnant or breastfeeding women

The safety of sulfacetamide during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not fully established. Do not use it without your doctor’s advice.

Daily dose
